About Intersexuality
Bulletin Board
Sharing your personal thoughts can be difficult, but it can be healing and
empowering too. It also lets other intersexuals, and parents of intersexed
children, know they aren't alone in their experiences and feelings.
Here are some suggested topics for discussion:
For intersexuals:
- Thoughts about being intersexual.
- If you underwent gender reassignment as an infant, how do you feel about
that? How do you feel about your parents okaying that?
- What was your youth like?
- Some maintain that experiences as an intersexual infant or youth (repeated
medical exams, secrecy, shame, embarrassment, misinformation, betrayal by a
caregiver) results in trauma similar to that experienced by abuse victims:
depression, body image disruption, dissociative patterns, sexual dysfunction,
intimacy issues, suicide attempts, and PTSD. Is this something you can relate
too and how have you dealt with it?
- Have you been the victim of sexual abuse and/or domestic violence because
of your intersexuality?
- Life as an adult intersexual. Relationships, employment, medical issues.
- Coping with depression and suicidal thoughts.
For parents of intersexed children
- Thoughts on having an intersexed child. How has it affected you and other
members of your family?
- Deciding on gender reassignment.
- Your relationship with your adult child.
When you're done, take a look at what others are saying.
