Chapter 5: The Language of Champs

Turn it around!

While words can be quite damaging when used thoughtlessly and carelessly, they can also create a universe of challenge and enjoyment when used thoughtfully and deliberately. Words can easily cause the imagination to soar above vast and wondrous worlds, can teach children to think for themselves and make quality decisions, and can build the confidence and high self-esteem inherent to all successful people. Speaking to children in the language of success lays the foundation for creativity, love, caring, kindness, ingenuity, lightheartedness and humor. Successful language fosters all of these qualities in the child who hears them.

Our words are an outward expression of our representation of the world, which we pass on to our children. What we say to our children will be absorbed by them and then incorporated into their representation of the world. They, in turn, will pass it on to their children.

We urge all parents to think carefully about their words, and how they are delivered, when speaking to their children. Always remember that, though it may seem like they are not listening, your children are hearing every word you say.
