Details about Volunteering

SAFELINE relies on volunteers and provides training for women who are interested in supporting or helping survivors of sexual abuse.

Training covers various issues and can help you to:

  • Learn new skills and build on existing skills.
  • Build confidence and self esteem.
  • Identify with other women and be able to discuss sensitive issues within a safe and confidential environment.
  • Raise awareness of your own feelings and enable you to empathies with the feelings of others.

All kinds of help are needed:

  • Fundraising
  • Assistance with Social Events
  • Distributing Information
  • Leaflet Folding
  • Befriending
  • Help-Line Counseling
  • One-to-one Counseling
  • Facilitating a Group

If you have any of the above skills or any other skills that would be helpful, along with some spare time, then we would like to hear from you.

Topics we Cover in Training

  • Introduction to SAFELINE policies and procedures.
  • Confidentiality.
  • Facts and myths about rape and childhood sexual abuse.
  • Telephone and face-to-face support skills.
  • Why children don’t tell.
  • Effects on adult life.
  • Rape, childhood sexual abuse and the Law.
  • Follow up training in a wide range of related issues.

What we ask from our trained volunteers

  • To respect the confidentiality of the service we provide.
  • To recognize the importance of commitment and reliability.
  • To give a minimum of 4 hours per month as a volunteer.
  • To attend one volunteer meeting per month.
  • To give a minimum commitment of 1 years work to SAFELINE.
  • To abide by SAFELINE policies at all times.

How long is the Training?

The training initially consists of an induction program at a time to suit as many people as possible. This is followed by a probationary period and more in-depth training. The training takes about six months and there is normally a new intake of volunteers every six months.

What about my Expenses?

Reasonable child care and traveling expenses will be reimbursed.

How Do I Apply?

You can contact us by email, telephone or by letter to request a volunteer application form, two references will be required. You will be invited to come in for an informal interview prior to the start of training. Depending on the work you are requested to do it may be necessary for you to attend for supervision which will be provided by SAFELINE.

The purpose of SAFELINE is:

to relieve suffering and advance education amongst women experiencing the after effects of the trauma of childhood sexual abuse, without distinction of sexual orientation, race, color or of political, religious or other opinions.

The aims of SAFELINE are:

  • The relief of women suffering from the after effects of the trauma of childhood sexual abuse.
  • To advance education and promote awareness.
  • The provision of a fundamentally safe place for women to be themselves without pressure, judgment or expectations being placed upon them.
  • To collect and disseminate information and advice on the trauma of childhood sexual abuse and it's after effects in adult life by means of groups, helpline, befriending and workshops.
  • To raise funds required for the achievement of these objectives.
