Borderline Personality Disorder - BPD faqs

Mercury poisoning causing problems?

QUESTION:

Dear Dr. Heller,

I was pregnant 30 years ago when I was working in a chemistry lab doing CO2s using mercury. My daughter has several of the traits for borderline personality disorder, but not as severe as most seem to have in the questions submitted to you. She has relationship problems, some compulsive behavior, low self-esteem, a tendency to self-destruct when things are going well, has never been able to handle change, and we all walk on eggshells around her. She is going to a counselor now to help with her relationship with her daughter. Could mercury be the problem, and if so, is there help for her? I have just ordered your book and am anxiously awaiting the opportunity to read it. She is able to function in life and is good at her job, but she has never been real happy and has a lot of trouble with relationships, mostly with herself. I would appreciate any help you can give me in dealing with this problem and how I could help my granddaughter deal with her mother's moods.

Thank you.

ANSWER:

There is no question that heavy metal poisoning can cause brain damage. You might consider getting a mercury or other heavy metal screening, and get it chelated if present.   Poisoning - whether accidental or intentional - can also aggravate underlying problems. This may be the case with your daughter. I'd strongly recommend you check the screening test at the top left on this Website and go over possible diagnoses with her. It's extremely unusual for people not to do better when the underlying problems are treated.
