Treatment for Binge Eating Disorder Takes Time

July 2, 2017 Grace Bialka

Treating binge eating disorder takes longer than most of us would like. Here, I share my experience of binge eating treatment and the long road to recovery.

I always knew that treatment for binge eating disorder wouldn't happen overnight. What I didn't know, however, was how much time binge eating disorder treatment would take. Finding freedom from binge eating disorder is usually not a linear path and takes time along with patience to get through.

My Binge Eating Disorder Treatment Experience

When entering my first binge eating disorder treatment program I thought it would be both my first and my last time in treatment. I was under the assumption that I would go in for a while and leave a new person with no issues around food. That was something I was very wrong about.

While I learned essential skills in my first round of treatment and was abstinent from behaviors for a while, this recovery did not stick the way I hoped it would. These events made me feel like a failure, like my eating disorder was always going to win, like I was not strong enough for wellness.

These thoughts kept me down for a while but as time went on I tried again, again and again. Each time around gaining more and more strength. With each try, I also found more and more time away from my disordered eating behaviors. Eventually, I found stable recovery. The path to this recovery was a difficult one but as I always say, was completely worth it.

Realizations About Binge Eating Disorder Treatment

Recovery is not a linear process and, unfortunately, may not stick the first time. This does not mean we aren't trying. This means only that we have to keep pushing for the life we want.

Think about how long it took for your disorder to develop and how long you have been active in it. How can we believe something that has taken so much of our lives could just go away in no time at all? There are numerous things that need to be looked at and worked through in order to find peace away from your eating disorder. Many of these things are painful and take, you guessed it, time to process.

My advice is to keep envisioning the life you wish to lead. This vision can serve as motivation to keep going down your binge eating disorder treatment path. Be gentle with yourself if binge eating slips occur. I firmly believe that is all part of the recovery process. Learn what you can from these moments and continue your journey.

Wellness will stick and it will feel amazing. You can get there. Believe in yourself, practice patience each day, and remember, you are stronger than you think.
