HealthyPlace Newsletter Reader Comments
We get a lot of comments from our readers. Feel free to share yours, either in writing or by calling our "Share Your Mental Health Experiences" line (number below). Here are a few comments that are reflective of the way many of our readers feel.
New HealthyPlace Diabetes Information Center
Ann writes about the link between mental illness and diabetes, plus she adds this observation: "Because of my mental illness, I have been to several mental illness and addictions centers. What I have noticed in some is the very large amount of people who suffer from diabetes at these centers. I attended a Christmas Party at one center and was astounded at the amount of sweets and other desserts that were handed out."
Stigma of Mental Illness
Responding to our article on "Schizophrenia, Support, Treatment and Stigma of Mental Illness" and Kristin Bell's appearance on the HealthyPlace Mental Health TV Show, Michael writes: It's nice to have public role models. I wish my ex-boss would have seen this. I just got fired after telling him I take medication for depression. (Ed. Note: Make sure you read Some Think Bipolar Disorder is Glamorous. Do You?)
New Facebook Integration Into HealthyPlace
Cecily says "I love that I can see the articles my friends are recommending on your site.
Bryan adds: "Because of the new FB buttons, some of my Facebook friends who come to HealthyPlace discovered Aimee White (Nitty Gritty of Anxiety Blog) through me. Now we're all fans.
Are You Your Psychological Disorder?
In this article, I posed the question: Does thinking of yourself as your mental health diagnosis end up hurting your self-esteem and contribute to stigma surrounding mental illness.
Sara's comment: "I say 'I'm bipolar' and I don't feel bad about it one bit. It's just a part of who I am."
Tom agreed with me: "I quit saying 'my son is schizophrenic. I now say he has schizophrenia.' When I used the word 'schizophrenic,' I actually had one person say to me 'Oh! He's a homocidal maniac, huh?"
