Barriers to Bliss: How to Move Forward Toward Happiness

June 21, 2014 Sydney Savion, D.Ed.

What barriers keep you from experiencing bliss? Are you holding on to sadness, disappointment, or hopelessness rather than focusing on an outlook of bliss? Do you feel like no matter what you do all roads lead to melancholy? Many of us can think of a long and distinguished list of barriers to our bliss.

I believe the single most significant decision I can make on a day-to-day basis is my choice of attitude. ... When my attitudes are right, there is no barrier too high, no valley too deep, no dream too extreme, no challenge too great for me.

~Charles R. Swindoll

When I think of my formative years, I grew up in a small rural farming community, my mother was diagnosed with a fatal heart virus, my sister got run over by a drunk-driver when she was four (thank God she is alive and well today), and a vicious dog bit me on my face. I could use those reasons to place barriers to my bliss, if I wanted to do so. But my attitude makes the difference.

Barriers To Bliss Don't Have to Include Trauma

You can remove your barriers to bliss, no matter how traumatic. There are barriers to bliss that keep you from happiness. Here's how to find them. So, quite frankly, these were traumatic events in my life that could have easily been emotional barriers to bliss. But, I chose to turn the page to the chapter on living a blissful life and am grateful for the blessings that are bestowed upon me every day. Facing loss or a traumatic event doesn’t have to seize your life and hold you hostage from experiencing bliss, personal fulfillment, and happiness.

Top Five Barriers to Bliss

Are you thinking, speaking, and being the change you wish to see? Consider the top five barriers that may be keeping you from making progress towards living a blissful life:

  1. Negative mind set: Yields negative behaviors
  2. Starved spirit: Creates a void of inspiration
  3. Neglecting self-care: Compounds stress
  4. Resisting life transition: Weakens your ability to adapt and start anew
  5. Attached to toxic relationships: Drains your spirit in every way

No doubt, life can be a zany ride. There is no barrier too high, no valley too deep, no dream too extreme, and no challenge too great for you, but you must believe. Be the change you wish to see in you and choose the journey of living a blissful life.

It is time to identify and acknowledge those emotional barriers to bliss that have kept you imprisoned. This will help you begin to surrender those barriers to bliss that have been holding you hostage from experiencing joy, personal fulfillment and happiness. It will release you to turn the page to the chapter on living a blissful life.

There are no constraints on the human mind, no walls around the human spirit, no barriers to our progress except those we ourselves erect.

~Ronald Reagan
