Introduction to Cheryl Wozny, Author of ‘Verbal Abuse in Relationships’

December 22, 2020 Cheryl Wozny

I’m Cheryl Wozny and I am excited to join the team at HealthyPlace on the Verbal Abuse in Relationships blog. I am thankful that I have the opportunity to share with you my background experiences along with all of the tools I have gained through years of therapy and self-exploration.

Verbal Abuse in Cheryl Wozny’s Childhood and Beyond

I grew up in a home where verbal abuse was a regular occurrence. The childhood and adolescent years can be some of the most influential times of a person’s life. As a young child facing constant ridicule and verbal assaults, this resulted in extremely low self-esteem, depression, and anxiety which I carried through to my adulthood.

Navigating my teenage years into adulthood with low self-worth had a direct impact on many of my life choices. This played itself out in my romantic interests to job choices. I would fall into the same habit of choosing partners that did not treat me well and worked in places that did not value my contributions.

Cheryl Wozny Breaks the Verbal Abuse in Relationships Cycle

With extensive therapy, I have been able to recognize how my unconscious decisions have formed my life path. Slowly, I began to make an effort to find a better lifestyle for myself in all aspects. I am now happily married with a very supportive spouse and have four wonderful children with who I am open with about my mental health struggles.

I look forward to sharing some of my struggles and what I have learned through the years with you in hopes that you too can begin to find the support and goodness that you deserve and leave verbal abuse in relationships behind.

This reminds me of something my mother pulled! [WARNING: this will probably be the crummiest thing you ever heard of!] We attended my grandmother's funeral, then went to the buffet that followed. My mother and I were sitting @ table with several other people. When I stood up to adjust the ceiling fan, my mother snapped my name at me, like she'd talk to a dog. Then she commanded me: SIT and STAY: again, like she'd talk to a dog.
A couple years later, she offered to pay for a plane ticket for me to visit her. Needless to say, I never visited her again! [Later on "Family Feud," they had a question: What DOG commands, when given to a PERSON, would make you MOST ANGRY? I got 2 of them right!!!]
Have you ever heard of a mother doing something this crummy to an adult daughter, when she knows she has an audience? At the time, I was 52 and she was 77. She died last year at age 93, without ever having dementia, so there was literally NO EXCUSE for this behavior.
