Schizoaffective disorder, in simplistic terms, is a mixture of the thought disordered symptoms of schizophrenia and the mood disorder symptoms of bipolar disorder. It is one of the most debilitating mental illnesses, but it is a treatable mental illness. With the right treatment, people who suffer from schizoaffective disorder can recover and lead a normal life.

Sandra's pen name is Sandra Yuen MacKay to incorporate her Chinese maiden name. She is a 40-year-old artist, author and advocate who lives in Vancouver, Canada. At age 15, she was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia and her current diagnosis is schizoaffective disorder. Sandra has been struggling for most of her life to cope with the symptoms of her disease and the side effects of the medications required to keep those symptoms in check. Sandra wrote My Schizophrenic Life: The Road To Recovery From Mental Illness, a story of triumph with lessons for all.
